芒神,河洛語 (bang-sin),在中國古代指掌管柭木的官吏,後衍生為主宰草木的鬼神,到了台灣又被稱作魅神、魍神、亡神仔、無神仔,最常見的稱呼就是大家熟知的魔神仔 (mô-sîn-á)。一說為兒童、婦女或登山者的亡魂所變成;另一說則是指魔神仔是山中的魑魅魍魎、山精鬼魅,會以食物牽人入山,失蹤獲救者常被發現口、腹內塞滿泥土、蚯蚓、蟋蟀

bang-sin (god of silver-grass), it's was name for ambassador in ancient China, then it became ghosts dominating grass and woods, when the name spread to Taiwan hundreds of years back, many other names were expanded, and mostly being called "mô-sîn-á".
Some says it's haunting spirits of children, women or dead alpinists, others says it's part of mountain's spirit. They lure people into the mountain by food, but those missing were found mouth and belly stuffed with mud, earthworms and grasshoppers.
